About K9 Friends in Dubai
K9 Friends is a Dubai-based rescue shelter which helps abandoned dogs find new homes. Formed in 1989, it is the country’s longest running dog shelter and is purely run by volunteers. The shelter ensures that all dogs receive health checks and are neutered prior to being adopted, a process they take very seriously. All the proceeds go directly to the shelter and support the physical function of running the property as well as taking care of the dogs.
How can you help?
The shelter offers several volunteer opportunities such as dog walking, helping out with the admin like coordinating dog adoptions and connecting unwanted dogs with their new owners. Volunteers can also help out, with managing the kennels which currently hold over 100 dogs, as well as helping out during events organized at the shelter.
K9 Friends go into great lengths to ensure the wellbeing of every dog. Apart from walking, feeding, and bathing them, the volunteers spend a lot of time showering the dogs with love and socializing with them, which is an important aspect of an animal’s life and affects their overall behaviour. Some dogs have been living in the shelter for 8 years without the love of a family. The older they are, the less likely they are to be adopted, so volunteers spend a lot of time playing with them.
Volunteers who are interested in helping out will join a coffee morning session where all the opportunities to get involved will be discussed. Those interested in running the kennels and administration will be given a separate training to understand the procedures and policies.
